Graduation

Congratulations to my mom, the new college grad (except for that one pesky math course this summer). The weekend was a lot of fun, there was shopping with Amelia and Hannah and trying to fit gigantic balloons into the car. Then making sushi with my siblings and feeling that same panic at any sound that resembled the garage door and the possibility that our parents would catch us in our mess.

Saturday was fun seeing the campus and lots of fun people, the graduation was not too long, and the party was pretty amazing if I do say so myself. Sunday was super relaxing and fun hanging out with the family and playing with and holding my nieces, good good times.

And then it snowed just for me as I was leaving to come back to a heat advisory for the DC area.

Consolation Prize

All of my plans for this weekend fell through; consequently, I allowed myself to sulk in my blanket fort last night and catch up on a bit of TV.

Today though, I took a bike ride along the Potomac.

And then went to the Air Show at Andrews AFB- not too shabby for a plan B.

Slidy Smith Island Cake

I'm not entirely sure how the topic of islands came up at lunch, but we talked for a while about Tangier Island in Virginia (where a very unique dialect of Elizabethan English is spoken) and then moved on to Smith Island in Maryland. Smith Island is Maryland's only inhabited island in the Chesapeake Bay and is probably only known about because of this cake. I still had a few spots on my list, so I decided that I was going to make one.

Things were going pretty well, but the icing wasn't turning out exactly like it was supposed to. And that would have been fine, except that the cake needed to be transported to Spencer's house for his birthday. At one point, I had to pull over and try to keep the layers upright- that was a very sticky process.

The cake tasted great though, and I'm not going to tell you how much butter and sugar was involved in this adventure.

Also, just so you know- it was advised not to actually visit Tangier or Smith Island, because they are boring.

The Gold Cup

Last Saturday I found myself back at the track. We had a much smaller group this time due to a scheduling conflict with some service projects, but I'd rather go to the Gold Cup any day (that probably means that I'm a bad person).
Our little party of four had a lovely day, and we had a pretty fantastic spread if I do say so myself. Jen enjoyed not doing any homework, Kraig spent the day taking about 600 pictures of the scantily clad ladies in hats, and Derek just enjoyed the fact that he was wearing pink pants.

I have no idea which horses won, but who cares when you can wear a hat like this.

Dressing Up

I had two occasions to wear hats last weekend, and another one coming up this Saturday (how bizarre is it that I actually have enough fancy hats to cover each occasion?)

Friday of course was the Royal Wedding. I did not wake up at 4am to watch (I don't think I'd even do that for my own wedding) but I did attend a lovely party that evening.

This is my favorite hat from the day (care of abc.com) but this one is a close second

And here I am with the lovely couple. Also of note that evening- my new niece Sophia was born!!! She came into the world on the day of the royal wedding, Osama Bin Laden's death, and at the exact moment I was watching the amazing car chase from Fast Five. I don't know what all of these things mean exactly, but she's probably destined for greatness.

Saturday was the Navy vs. St John's croquet match in Annapolis. It was my first visit to the town, and it was lovely and quaint, and the day reminded me that I am not nearly ready for a Virginia summer.
And here I am with my twin for the day, Jill. We even had matching denim jackets before it got too warm.
