I'm not entirely sure how the topic of islands came up at lunch, but we talked for a while about Tangier Island in Virginia (where a very unique dialect of Elizabethan English is spoken) and then moved on to Smith Island in Maryland. Smith Island is Maryland's only inhabited island in the Chesapeake Bay and is probably only known about because of this cake. I still had a few spots on my list, so I decided that I was going to make one.
Things were going pretty well, but the icing wasn't turning out exactly like it was supposed to. And that would have been fine, except that the cake needed to be transported to Spencer's house for his birthday. At one point, I had to pull over and try to keep the layers upright- that was a very sticky process.
The cake tasted great though, and I'm not going to tell you how much butter and sugar was involved in this adventure.
Also, just so you know- it was advised not to actually visit Tangier or Smith Island, because they are boring.
