Hurriquake

It's been a rather exciting week here. For several thousand students at Mason, it was orientation and move in week. This translates to a number of students in a panic because they waited to the last minute to register/think about their immigration status/apply for a visa/apply for admission. Classes start next week- it's a little too late to be applying for a visa to get into the U.S.

Then, we had our little earthquake. I'm sad to say my relatively robust earthquake preparedness education in elementary school did not kick in. At first I thought it was construction; we've had a lot of that on campus. Then as papers started off my shelves, and many more seconds than any construction digging should last, it finally sunk in that we were having an earthquake. I thought about getting under my desk, I thought about standing in the doorway, but I just sat in my chair. I did, however, take off my shoes (4 1/2 in. mauve suede pumps- not the best for running on shaky ground).

Then there was a fire alarm the next day.....

Then I went to the store last night to get some sugar, and there wasn't a single water bottle left. There was however plenty of sugar, I guess people don't think about baking in the event of impending natural disaster. My plans include movies, board games, and a quiche.

I'll keep you abreast of any further developments.
